How Do You Know If You Need A Root Canal?

Many of our patients ask us about the procedure of root canals. One of the most common
questions is, “How do I know if I need a root canal?” Answer: You cannot determine this for
yourself.
There are, however, various signs that you can look for to know if you need root canal or dental
care. Having a good understanding of symptoms to look out for with needing a root canal will
allow you to avoid experiencing frightening moments.

Why You May Need a Root Canal
Root canal therapy aims to remove damaged or infected pulp from the tooth. This infection or
damage can cause discomfort as it affects the nerve inside the tooth.
At Twingates Dental, our own Dr Foote can save a tooth from extraction by removing infected
pulp. Doing so can stop the spread of infection.

Common Symptoms That May Indicate You Need a Root Canal
Some of the symptoms of dental issues can appear when you have problems with your gums or
teeth. However, these signs should be followed up with an evaluation to determine if you need
a root canal.

1) Pain
If you experience pain in your mouth, teeth, or jaw, it could be a sign of tooth decay or a sinus
headache. You should see the dentist immediately if it lingers for more than a day or goes
severe at any given moment.

2) Sensitivity
If you have never experienced tooth sensitivity, then it’s essential that you speak with your
Dentist about it.
Some of the signs that indicate the presence of inflammation in the nerve are cold or hot
sensitivity, which can last for a minute or more after the cause has been removed. If you can’t
eat ice cream without experiencing this, then you should see the Dentist to see if you need a
root canal.

3) Tooth Changes
The appearance of a tooth can also be a sign of internal damage. For example, if a single tooth
has a distinct colour, it’s more likely to need root canal therapy. Likewise, a broken or chipped
tooth must receive root canal treatment if it has a damaged pulp.

4) Changes in the Gum
Please be sure to look for changes in the gums. An infected tooth may present as a bubble on
the gums. Inflammation, discolouration, and swelling in the gum are all signs of serious
problems. Get a dental exam to see if you need root canal therapy or another issue requiring
treatment.

How a Dentist Checks to See If You Need a Root Canal
Your Dentist will perform a thorough evaluation and imaging of your tooth to determine if it
requires root canal therapy. It needs to be extracted if it has damaged, infected, or inflamed
pulp.

Aftercare Following Root Canal Therapy
After the treatment, you may feel a minor discomfort in your tooth, usually lasting for a few
days. To prevent this, take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help control it.
After healing, your Dentist may recommend a crown, which can be placed on top of your tooth.
